The Plaza Fire Station was built in 1884 at a cost of $4,665. The volunteer company known as the Original 38's moved in on September 16, 1884. When the Los Angeles Fire Department went into service on February 1, 1886 the "Thirty-Eights" disbanded and Engine Company No. 1 was formed. Engine Co. No. 1 remained at this location until 1888.

Firemen and men in civilian clothes ride in both wagons. The engine driver is Michael McMahon. To the left of the driver of the hose cart is Jacob Kuhrts. Sitting on the hose is George Vail.
