On April 16, 1913 Fire Station 29 was opened to serve the far western suburbs of the fast growing city of Los Angeles.  William Mulholland had just opened the Aqueduct that nourished the almost phenomenal growth which would take place during the 20's and 30's.  Fire Station 29 replaced a hand-drawn hose cart staffed by the women of the community since the men were far away in The City.  The area didn't even have water mains hooked to the municipal water system until 2 years later.  Until then, the hot mineral spring near what is now the intersection of Beverly Blvd. and Oxford Ave. provided domestic water.

With modern equipment, including a motorized steamer, 29's provided the area with the finest in fire protection.  Unknown to them at the time, the fire station they opened would be staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for the next 75+ years, longer than any Los Angeles fire station before or since.
