AN ODE TO
FITZPATRICK
OF ENGINE FOUR
When Fitz
cooks, he doesn't read
The cook books his mother seems to need;
He doesn't fuss with pies or cakes;
He never roasts or boils or bakes;
He doesn't use the rolling pin,
Or measure level spoonfuls in;
He doesn't watch the kitchen clock'
He doesn't fill the cookie crock:
We all watch him with admiring eyes,
While Fitz fires and fries and fries!

"BACK
IN '25."
Old truck 6 went rolling out
On the first round of the gong.
Streets flashed by like pickets
And the siren wailed her song.
The fire-dragon--loose again.
Had a dwelling in its claw.
Its tail was lashing skyward.
Its stench was smoking raw.
Charlie Wykoff, acting Captain
Calmly led his gallant crew.
The place was ventilated.
The ladders fairly flew.
T'was then somebody shouted
From the sidelines, in the gloom,
"Oh, someone save that baby.
It's trapped within the room."
Charlie grabbed a trusty axe.
With "Swede", they worked like sin.
They cut a hole, grabbed a line,
And disappeared within.
Fire couldn't beat them back
Though darkness held full sway
Smoke was fiercely at their throats.
They grimly fought their way.
Charlie stumbled. On the floor
He heard a tiny wail.
He picked it up, staggered out.
Thank God they didn't fail.
The mother said, "My child is safe.
It wasn't there at all.
But thanks to you for saving
My baby's crying doll."
