JOHN M. RANDALL    
Fireman  (Military Leave from Engine Company No. 11)

April 19, 1943

The Los Angeles City Fire Department suffered it first war casualty when Staff Sergeant John M. Randall lost his life near Shreveport, La.  The army bomber in which he was serving as bombardier-navigator, crashed while on a training flight from Barksdale Field where he was stationed.  The accident occurred the morning of April 19, 1943.

JACK C. MANAHAN



Fireman (Military Leave)

October 14, 1943

Entered the department May 26, 1941 and entered the military service on military leave January 24, 1942.  Killed in action over Germany, October 14, 1943  This man, a new member of the department, had given every indication that he would serve with efficiency and honor.  His memory will be cherished by all of his former companions and by all members of the department.

JAMES L. ASHMORE



Fireman (Military Leave)

July 9, 1944

Entered the department January 20, 1941, and was granted military leave December 21, 1942;  he was reported missing on July 9, 1944;  later reported killed in action but exact date of death is not known;  the probable location of his death was in northern Italy in the vicinity of Leghorn.

Fireman (Military Leave from Engine Company No. 25 -A)

July 18, 1944

Entered the department August 4, 1941, and was granted military leave December 9, 1942;  
Killed in action in  France in the Normandy theatre of war.

Entered the department September 23, 1940, and was granted military leave July 13, 1943;

AUSTIN F. CASSELBERRY



Fireman  (Military Leave from Truck Company No. 24)

May 13, 1944*

Entered the department July 29, 1940 and was granted military leave February 15, 1943.  He was killed in action over Coblenz, Germany, on May 13, 1944.
    * The U. S. Army waited one year before officially considering Fireman Casselberry deceased.

EMMETT M. O'BRIEN
 
Fireman (Military Leave)

July 26, 1945

Entered the Department August 4, 1941 and was granted military leave February 6, 1943.  He was killed in an airplane crash while attempting a forced landing somewhere in Europe.
